Things to Do in Isla Verde and Carolina, Puerto Rico

The beach, the food and the mangroves next door: a local captain's guide to Isla Verde and Carolina, plus Isla Verde vs Condado.

Most visitors think they are staying in San Juan when they book a hotel in Isla Verde. They are actually in Carolina, the city next door, and the home of the SJU airport. I work here every day: our boats leave from Cangrejos Yacht Club, at the eastern end of Isla Verde. So this is my neighborhood guide, with the things to do in Isla Verde and Carolina that I recommend to my own guests.

1. Spend the day on Isla Verde Beach

This is the best city beach in the San Juan area, and I say that as someone who looks at it from the water every day. The sand is wide and soft, the water is usually calm, and you can rent chairs, umbrellas and paddleboards right on the beach. The eastern end, in front of the big hotels, is the widest. The western end, called Pine Grove, has small gentle waves and is where the surf schools teach beginners.

2. Try the Carolina public beach

A few minutes east of the hotels is the Balneario de Carolina, the public beach. It has parking, restrooms, showers and picnic areas, and it is where local families spend their Sundays. If you want more space and a more local feel than the hotel strip, come here. There is a small parking fee.

3. See Isla Verde from the water

From the beach you see the ocean. From a boat you see everything else: the hotel skyline, the reef that protects the shore, planes coming in low over the water to land, and the green line of mangroves where the city ends. Our dock is 10 minutes from any Isla Verde hotel, with free guarded parking.

If you only have a short window, the 30-minute coastal reef ride is $50 per person. If you have a morning, the Signature 90-minute tour covers the coast, the lagoon and the mangrove channels for $100 per person. We never take more than 6 guests, and it is a dry, shaded ride.

4. Eat in Piñones, five minutes away

Cross the small bridge at Boca de Cangrejos and the hotels disappear. Piñones is a strip of wooden kiosks between the ocean and the mangrove forest, where cooks fry alcapurrias and bacalaítos over wood fires. Go for lunch, order a cold coconut, and walk the boardwalk afterwards. I wrote a full guide to Piñones and Loíza if you want to make a day of it.

5. Go out for dinner on the avenue

Avenida Isla Verde has everything from Puerto Rican criollo restaurants to sushi and steakhouses, plus bakeries (panaderías) that open early. A panadería breakfast is a local habit worth copying: a café con leche, a quesito (a sweet cream cheese pastry) and a toasted sandwich for a few dollars.

6. Enjoy the nightlife without leaving the neighborhood

Several Isla Verde hotels have casinos, lobby bars with live salsa on weekends, and rooftop lounges. It is an easy night out because you can walk back to your room. For a quieter evening, our night cruise shows the lights of the coast from the water.

7. Take the kids to the children’s museum

The Museo del Niño de Carolina is a hands on museum for children, a few minutes from the beach. It is a good plan for a rainy day. Check the schedule before you go.

8. Learn a little about Carolina

Carolina is known as Tierra de Gigantes, the Land of Giants. Its most famous son is Roberto Clemente, the baseball Hall of Famer and humanitarian, who was born here in 1934. You will see his name on the stadium, on schools and on the main avenue. For Puerto Ricans he is much more than an athlete: he died in 1972 on a relief flight carrying aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua, and that example of service still means a great deal on this island.

Isla Verde or Condado: which one should you choose?

This is the question I hear most from people still planning. Both are good, and they are only about 10 minutes apart.
