It happens to our guests every single week. Checkout is at 11:00 AM, the flight home leaves at 6:00 PM, and suddenly you have a whole afternoon, a pile of suitcases and nowhere to put either one.

I’m Captain Jose, and I have spent more than 13 years on the water around San Juan, Carolina and Loíza. What most visitors never find out is that our dock is less than 5 minutes from the SJU airport. So close that on our tours we cruise right past the end of the runway and watch the planes come in low over the lagoon.

The Checkout Gap: Hours to Fill and Bags in Your Hands

Most people solve the last day in one of three ways. They sit in the hotel lobby. They pay for luggage storage in San Juan and then worry about getting back to it in traffic. Or they give up and go to the airport four hours early.

None of those is how you want to remember Puerto Rico. Your last hours on the island should feel like part of the trip, not like waiting.

What to Do Near the San Juan Airport: Get on the Water

Our tours leave from Cangrejos Yacht Club in Carolina, in the same town as the airport. In 90 minutes you glide through the mangrove channels of Torrecilla Lagoon, look for herons, pelicans and the occasional manatee, and come out along the coast with the Isla Verde skyline in front of you.

It is a dry tour. There is no snorkeling and nobody gets soaked, so you board your flight in the same clothes, with no sand in your shoes and no wet swimsuit in your carry-on. There is shade, comfortable seating and never more than 6 guests on the boat.

How a Last Day Tour Works

We have done this many times, and our crew takes care of the whole thing so you do not have to plan around your bags.

• We pick you up. Our driver meets you at your hotel or rental in Isla Verde, Condado, Old San Juan or Carolina after checkout.
• Your bags are handled. They ride with you in our van and stay locked in it while you are on the water. If you prefer, leave them with the bell desk at your hotel and we stop for them on the way to the airport.
• You take your tour. Shoes go in the welcome basket, drinks go in the iced cooler, and you relax.
• We drive you to departures. The airport is less than 5 minutes from the dock, so you go from the boat to your terminal without touching a taxi line.

Landing Early? Start Your Trip the Same Way

The same idea works in reverse. If you land in the morning and your Airbnb or hotel check in is not until 3:00 or 4:00 PM, do not spend your first hours in Puerto Rico guarding suitcases in a coffee shop.

We meet you at the airport, your luggage stays in the van, and your vacation starts on the water. When the tour ends we drive you to your door, right on time for check in.

How Much Time Do You Need Before Your Flight?

My rule is simple: choose a tour that starts at least 4 hours before your flight. That leaves time for the 90-minute tour, the short drive and a calm 2 hours at the airport. Our tours leave every 2 hours, from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

With one of the 30-minute rides you can cut it closer, but I would still plan to be at the airport 2 hours before departure. If you are flying to the mainland United States, remember that checked bags pass through the USDA agricultural inspection before you reach the airline counter, so leave a few extra minutes for that.

If your schedule is tight, message us first. We will tell you honestly whether it fits. I would rather lose a booking than have a guest run for a gate.

Last Day in San Juan: Common Questions

Can we really bring our luggage?

Yes. Bags travel in our van and stay locked inside while you are on the boat, or they wait at your hotel and we collect them on the way to the airport. Suitcases do not come on the boat.

How far is the dock from the SJU airport?

Less than 5 minutes by car. Cangrejos Yacht Club and Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport are both in Carolina, on opposite sides of the same lagoon.

Will I get wet or sandy before my flight?

No. This is a dry, shaded ride. You can come dressed for the plane.

What if my flight time changes?

Tell us as soon as you know. We will move you to another departure the same day whenever there is space.

Can we book this last minute?

Often, yes. Because we take only 6 guests per trip, seats do sell out, so check availability as soon as you know your checkout and flight times.
