Sunset in San Juan, Puerto Rico: Times by Month and the Best Places to Watch

I plan my evenings around the sunset. It is part of the job: every night I have to know the exact minute the sun touches the horizon, so my guests are in the right place when it happens. So if you are asking what time sunset is in Puerto Rico, you have come to the right captain. In San Juan the sun sets between about 5:45 PM in late November and 7:05 PM in late June and July. The month by month table is below, followed by the best places to watch.
Sunset times in San Juan by month
These are approximate times for the middle of each month. Puerto Rico stays on Atlantic Standard Time all year and does not change the clocks, so in winter we are one hour ahead of New York, and in summer we are on the same time.
| Month | Sunset (mid month) |
|---|---|
| January | 6:08 PM |
| February | 6:26 PM |
| March | 6:33 PM |
| April | 6:40 PM |
| May | 6:49 PM |
| June | 7:02 PM |
| July | 7:03 PM |
| August | 6:50 PM |
| September | 6:25 PM |
| October | 6:01 PM |
| November | 5:47 PM |
| December | 5:51 PM |
Two things to know. First, the tropics have a short twilight: about 25 minutes after the sun goes down, it is dark. Do not arrive at sunset time, arrive 45 minutes before. Second, the best color often comes 10 to 15 minutes after the sun is gone, so do not leave too soon.
The best places to watch the sunset in San Juan
1. The lawn of El Morro
The classic. Families fly kites on the wide green field in front of the fort while the sun goes down over the entrance to the bay. Bring something to sit on.
2. Paseo de la Princesa and the San Juan Gate
The promenade below the city walls faces west over the bay. The old stone turns gold in the last half hour of light, and you can walk straight into the old city for dinner afterwards.
3. The city walls near La Rogativa
A small plaza on top of the wall with a bronze sculpture and an open view of the bay. Quieter than El Morro.
4. Condado Lagoon
Calm water, paddleboarders and the bridge in silhouette. A good choice if you are staying in Condado and do not want to go into the old city.
5. Piñones
Order a cold coconut at a kiosk and watch the light change over the palms and the surf. The sun sets behind the city from here, so the sky does the work.
6. From the water

Here is what the land spots cannot give you. San Juan’s coast faces north, so from most beaches the sun sets behind buildings, to your left. From a boat we simply turn to face it. You see the sun go down over open water with the whole skyline in front of it, and then the city lights come on while the sky is still pink. There is nothing between you and the view.
Our sunset cruise is timed to the season, so we are in position before the sun goes down, whatever the month. It is $125 per person with no more than 6 guests, or $600 for a private boat for two hours. Bring your own champagne or white wine and we provide the ice.
Tips for a better sunset
- A few clouds are good. A completely clear sky gives a plain sunset. Scattered clouds catch the color.
- After rain is often best. A late afternoon shower that clears by 5 PM usually means a strong sunset.
- Winter light is softer. From December to February the air is drier and the colors are cleaner.
- For photos, turn around. The light on faces and on the city behind you is at its best in the last 20 minutes.
- Book sunset tours early in high season. There is only one sunset a day and small boats fill up.
Where are the best sunsets in Puerto Rico?
On the west coast. Rincón, Aguadilla and Cabo Rojo face the open sea to the west, so the sun drops straight into the water. If your trip includes the west, plan to be on a beach there at the end of the day. In the San Juan area, the water is the closest you will get to that same open horizon.
Frequently asked questions
What time is sunset in Puerto Rico today?
Use the table above for an estimate, and check a weather app for the exact minute. It changes by only a minute or so from day to day.
Does Puerto Rico have daylight saving time?
No. The island stays on Atlantic Standard Time all year.
How long does a sunset cruise last?
Ours runs between 90 minutes and two hours, enough to be on the water for golden hour, the sunset and the first city lights.
What happens if it rains?
Our boats have full shade and we go out in light rain, which often passes quickly. If conditions are not safe, we reschedule at no cost or refund you in full.
What should I wear on a sunset cruise?
Whatever you would wear to a nice dinner. It is a dry ride, and many guests go straight to a restaurant afterwards. Bring a light layer in winter for the breeze.
Save one evening for it
You only get so many sunsets on a trip. Give at least one of them your full attention. Planning a romantic trip? Read my guide to a Puerto Rico honeymoon.
