Best Time to Visit Puerto Rico: A Month by Month Guide from a Local Captain

Weather, crowds, prices, hurricane season and sea conditions for every month, from a captain who is on the water in Puerto Rico all year.

I am on the water in Puerto Rico twelve months a year, so I watch the seasons closely: the wind, the swells, the afternoon rain, the crowds at the dock. The short answer to when you should come is this: the best time to visit Puerto Rico is from mid December to April for the driest weather, and May, June or November for lower prices and fewer people. The longer answer depends on what you want from the trip.

The weather in one paragraph

Puerto Rico is warm all year. Daytime temperatures on the coast stay in the 80s Fahrenheit in every month, and the sea is warm enough to swim in any day of the year. What changes is the rain and the wind. Winter is drier and breezier. Summer and fall are hotter and more humid, with short, heavy showers in the afternoon. The mountains are always a few degrees cooler than the coast.

The three seasons for travelers

SeasonMonthsWhat to expect
High seasonMid December to AprilDriest weather, most visitors, highest prices. Book early.
Shoulder seasonMay, June and NovemberGood weather, fewer crowds, better prices. My favorite.
Low seasonJuly to OctoberHot and humid, lowest prices, peak of hurricane season.

When is hurricane season in Puerto Rico?

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. The months with the highest risk are August and September, and into October. That does not mean it rains every day or that a storm is likely during your week. Most days in those months are sunny with an afternoon shower. It means you should buy travel insurance, book flexible rates and watch the forecast before you fly. Storms are tracked for days in advance, so there is time to change plans.

Month by month

January

Dry, breezy and busy. Christmas in Puerto Rico lasts into mid January: Three Kings Day is January 6, and the San Sebastián Street Festival fills Old San Juan with music around the third weekend of the month. The north coast gets winter swells, which is great for surfers and a reason to choose protected water for boating.

February and March

The driest months and the heart of high season. Humpback whales pass the west coast near Rincón. Spring break brings crowds in March. Reserve hotels, cars and tours well ahead.

April

Still dry, a little warmer, and quieter after Easter week. One of the best months of the year.

May and June

The first rains arrive in May and everything turns very green. Prices drop. In June the sea starts to flatten out, and on June 23 the whole island goes to the beach for the Noche de San Juan, when people walk backwards into the water at midnight for good luck.

July

Summer vacation for Puerto Rican families, so beaches are lively on weekends. It is hot, and the water is at its calmest and clearest. In late July, Loíza celebrates the Fiestas de Santiago Apóstol, which I describe in my guide to Piñones and Loíza.

August, September and October

The quietest and cheapest months, and the peak of hurricane season. If you are flexible and insured, you can have beaches and forts almost to yourself.

November

The rains ease, the humidity drops and the high season crowds have not arrived. Thanksgiving week is busy, the rest of the month is calm. Christmas music starts right after Thanksgiving.

December

Festive from the first week. The two weeks around Christmas and New Year are the most expensive of the year. Come in early December for good weather at better prices.

The best time for a boat tour

Calm water on a boat ride along the coast near San Juan, Puerto Rico

Here is something most guides do not tell you. In winter, the Atlantic side of the island gets swells from the north, so open water trips can be bumpy from November to March. In summer the ocean is flatter, but afternoon showers are more common.

That is one reason we run our tours where we do. The lagoon and mangrove channels around Piñones are protected water, so the ride is calm in any month, and our boats have full shade for sun or a passing shower. Mornings are the calmest time of day all year. If the sea is not safe, we reschedule at no cost or refund you in full. You can see the options on the Signature 90-minute tour page.
