Puerto Rico Honeymoon: Romantic Things to Do for Couples

I have watched a lot of couples fall quiet on my boat at sunset. Honeymooners, people celebrating 40 years, and more than a few nervous men with a ring in their pocket. Puerto Rico is made for this kind of trip: no passport for U.S. citizens, direct flights, warm water all year, and enough variety to fill a week without repeating a day. Here is how I would plan a Puerto Rico honeymoon or a romantic getaway.
Why Puerto Rico works for a honeymoon
- Easy: U.S. citizens fly in as on any domestic flight, pay in dollars and use their own phone plan.
- Varied: a 500 year old city, a rainforest, glowing bays and small islands with empty beaches, all within two hours.
- Good food: from wood fire kiosks to tasting menus.
- Any budget: boutique inns in Old San Juan, beachfront resorts, or a villa on Vieques.
Romantic things to do for couples
1. A private sunset cruise

This is the one I can speak about from experience. As the sun drops behind the city, the sky goes orange and pink and the skyline turns into a silhouette. On a private charter it is only the two of you, your music on the speakers and a bottle of champagne on ice. We welcome you to bring your own champagne or white wine, and we provide the ice and the cooler. A private sunset charter is $600 for two hours, and there is a shared sunset cruise at $125 per person with no more than 6 guests on board.
2. An evening walk in Old San Juan
After dark the old city is at its most romantic. The walls and forts are lit, the day visitors are gone, and music drifts out of the plazas. Walk Paseo de la Princesa, have dinner on Calle Fortaleza or Calle San Sebastián, and finish with a drink on a rooftop.
3. A waterfall morning in El Yunque
Go early, before the tour buses, and you can have a river pool almost to yourselves. Bring water shoes and a towel, and check the Forest Service website for current access rules.
4. The bioluminescent bay
Paddling a kayak in the dark while the water lights up blue under your hands is as romantic as it sounds. The nearest bay to San Juan is in Fajardo. The brightest is Mosquito Bay on the island of Vieques. Go near the new moon.
5. A day or two on Culebra or Vieques
These two small islands off the east coast are where Puerto Ricans go to escape. Flamenco Beach on Culebra is regularly named among the most beautiful beaches in the world. Vieques has wild horses, quiet coves and Mosquito Bay. You get there by ferry from Ceiba or by a short flight on a small plane. For a honeymoon, I would spend two nights on one of them.
6. Sunsets in Rincón
If you have a week, drive to the west coast. Rincón faces west over open water, the pace is slow, and every evening the whole town stops to watch the sun go down.
7. A proposal or a vow renewal on the water
Not every romantic trip is a honeymoon. If you are planning to ask the question, I help coordinate everything quietly: your song ready on the speakers, the boat stopped in calm water at the right moment, and photos of the moment itself. See the sunset proposal charter. We also host small ceremonies and vow renewals on board.
Where to stay
| Area | Best for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Old San Juan | History, walking, restaurants, boutique hotels | No beach at your door |
| Condado | City energy, dining, shopping | Stronger waves |
| Isla Verde | The best city beach, close to the airport and our dock | Resort feel |
| Dorado or Río Grande | Large luxury resorts, golf, spa | You will need a car |
| Vieques or Culebra | Privacy and empty beaches | Ferry or small plane |
| Rincón | Sunsets and a relaxed surf town | Two and a half hours from San Juan |
A 5 day honeymoon plan
- Day 1: arrive, beach afternoon, dinner in Old San Juan.
- Day 2: Old San Juan and the forts in the morning, private sunset cruise in the evening.
- Day 3: El Yunque waterfalls, lunch at the Luquillo kiosks, bioluminescent bay at night.
- Day 4: day trip or overnight to Culebra or Vieques.
- Day 5: slow morning, lunch in Piñones, fly home.
When to go
December to April has the driest weather. May, June and November are quieter and less expensive. If you marry in late summer, buy travel insurance, since that is hurricane season. I go through every month in the best time to visit Puerto Rico, and I list sunset times for each month in my sunset guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is Puerto Rico a good honeymoon destination?
Yes. It combines beach, culture and nature without the paperwork of an international trip, and it suits both a long weekend and two weeks.
How many days do you need for a honeymoon in Puerto Rico?
Five days covers San Juan and the east. Seven to ten lets you add Vieques or Culebra and the west coast.
What is the most romantic thing to do in San Juan?
I am biased, but a private boat at sunset with nobody else on board is hard to beat. On land, an evening walk on Paseo de la Princesa.
Can we bring our own champagne on the boat?
Yes. Champagne, white wine, beer and clear drinks are welcome, and we provide ice. We only ask for no red wine or red drinks, to protect the white seats.

Whatever you are celebrating, I would be honored to be a small part of it. Tell me the occasion when you book and I will take care of the details.
